Acupuncture can be an effective addition to recovering from chemical dependency. Whether addicted to sweets, cigarettes or cocaine, acupuncture, sound healing, and nutritional support can help speed up and smooth the recovery.
Acupuncture and Addiction Recovery
Acupuncture is an effective treatment for many health concerns. Through manipulation of the meridian systems, the body’s energies are balanced and organ functions improved.
Points on the ear are often stimulated since the ear is like a computer keyboard for the brain. Through appropriate stimulation the brain centers for appetite control, balancing metabolism, and eliminating depression and addiction can be triggered.
Shen Men or “the Door of the Spirit,” is one of the primary acupuncture points used to aid in balancing the body it is a point that can open our emotional center. Research shows that it helps to restore the normal release of endorphins, the chemical receptor sites that are found everywhere in the body which give us a sense of wellbeing. Endorphins respond to many stimulants in life, both healthy and unhealthy. Endorphins are responsible for the “runner’s high.” But in the case of a smoker or even a foodaholic, these chemicals are “stuck” and dependent on the “fix” (of nicotine, drugs, alcohol, or sugar) in order to be released. Once certain points are stimulated, the patient begins to feel a sense of deep relaxation, the endorphins are released normally. The nervous need for the addictive substance subsides. The chemical addiction is gone.
Acupuncture also helps the body detoxify from the adverse effects of the addiction. Patients often report “feeling clean and whole again.” The number of treatments required varies from patient to patient, often three to twelve treatments are necessary. The community clinic offers a very affordable way to access the benefits of acupuncture.
